BEETLES

PROCESS & INSPIRATION

My Spring 2017 Final project was heavily inspired by nature; the color story as well as the shapes that I created were derived from plants and insects...specifically beetles. I researched a handful of beetles to explore shape and texture. Many designs from this lineup were created by taking parts of the beetle, enlarging it, and placing it on a body to create a voluminous/modern shape. In another effort to create interesting shapes, I draped with newspaper on a 1/4 form. This exploration of volume helped me arrive at many of my fan/pleated garments. For this look, I used a heavy wool coating for the jacket, light wool suiting for the pants, and a silk/wool blend for the top.

These garments feature antique gold buckles, snaps and grommets of varying sizes to add a harshness/texture to the rather soft color story and shapes of the clothes.
